Southside Lions Club

Lions Clubs International was founded in Chicago in 1916 by Melvin Jones, and the Lions Club of St. Louis South Side subsequently was chartered in July of 1924.  In 1925, Ms. Helen Keller spoke at a convention of the Lions Clubs International at Cedar Point, Ohio.  Ms. Keller’s speech to that convention was both inspirational and challenging.

“This is the opportunity I offer you, Lions—to foster and sponsor the work of the American Foundation for the Blind. Will you not help me hasten the day when there shall be no preventable blindness, no little deaf blind child untaught, no blind man or woman unaided? I appeal to you, Lions—you who have your sight, your hearing, you who are strong and brave and kind—will you not constitute yourselves Knights of the Blind in my crusade against darkness?”

And so those words of challenge soon became the inspiration and foundation for Lionism and the South Side Lions.  Lions Clubs around the world would all soon commit to the same motto:  WE SERVE.

The South Side Lions journey has been legendary locally, as our Club has served the less fortunate in the metro St. Louis area for over 100 years – one of the oldest charitable organizations in St. Louis.  Since 1924, we have focused on help for the blind and visually impaired, as well as those experiencing issues with their hearing.  In the past few decades, South Side has reached out to include other needy charitable organizations doing good work such as CHADS on teen suicide prevention, various homeless shelters, the Salvation Army, Brendan’s Backpacks for hungry children, NDI for diabetes disorders, Ranken Jordan pediatric hospital, Living Well Village treating teen eating disorders, and Midwest Braille Volunteers translating books into Braille – just to name a handful.  It is estimated that the Club has contributed thousands of hours of service work and possibly $1M in funds to support those in need over our 100 year existence.  WE SERVE.

Please consider giving of your time and talents to those who need you by exploring membership in our Club.

“Although the world is full of suffering, it is also full of  overcoming.”
